4 Expert tips to help you find the best inexpensive wines

The best inexpensive wine is not always the one with the highest scores; rather, it is the one that fits the moment and the occasion. Here are a few recommendations to help you approach the selection:

  1. Start from the producer: the words “mis en bouteille au domaine” on a French label or “imbottigliato all’origine” on an Italian one are the most reliable signals of the wine’s quality and integrity. When selecting your inexpensive wine, focus on the producer and not just the label. A grower who has farmed the same vineyard for generations will consistently outperform a large commercial producer from a more prestigious region. This distinction becomes very important for inexpensive wines.
  2. Appellation over brand: look beyond the famous brands and focus simply on the appellation. Regions such as Bourgogne AOC, Etna Rosso, Tavel and Sancerre Rouge sit outside the collector spotlight and consistently deliver more than the price suggests. Pricing in these appellations has yet to reflect the quality being produced; winemaking intervention is minimal and yields are substantially lower than their Grand Cru counterparts.
  3. Vintage matters: wines that fall into the entry and mid level category tend to be more vintage sensitive than their premium counterparts. For this kind of wine, in fact, estates invest less winemaking budget to correct a difficult year. Stick to 2019, 2021 and 2022 vintages for French and Italian reds, with 2022 standing out as one of the most consistent vintages in recent memory. For whites, the years 2021 and 2022 delivered excellent conditions across most European appellations. 2021 was particularly strong for Loire whites, while 2022 stood out for Burgundy and Austria.
  4. Match the wine to the occasion. If you’re planning a special occasion or dinner with your loved ones, reach for something more fruit forward. An Oregon Pinot Noir or an entry level Burgundy will fit perfectly. A Chablis Premier Cru or a structured Pouilly-Fumé carries enough complexity to hold its own at any table for a more considered occasion. If you wish to impress your guests, reach for a Sicilian Etna Rosso or a Loire Sancerre Rouge. These are unusual choices from regions your guests are unlikely to have explored yet.
How to find the best inexpensive wines

How we rate the best inexpensive wines

  • 5 = Exceptional
  • 4 = Excellent
  • 3 = Very Good
  • 2 = Good
  • 1 = Fair

A wine that scores between 4 and 5 points indicates outstanding quality, while lower scores like 1 and 2 suggest mediocrity.

We rated the best inexpensive wines on four additional criteria:

  • Appearance (up to 5 points): clarity, color, brightness
  • Aroma and bouquet (up to 15 points): intensity, complexity, absence of flaws
  • Flavor and palate (up to 20 points): balance of acidity, tannin, alcohol, depth and mouthfeel
  • Overall impression (up to 10 points): harmony, complexity, typicity and finish

For selecting the best inexpensive wines on the market, our panel applied one additional criterion above all others: does this wine deliver more quality than its price suggests? The ones that made this list did so because they genuinely over delivered in the glass.

We compared bottles against others in the same price tier and style, reds against reds, whites against whites, sparkling against sparkling. To ensure our ratings are fair and contextually relevant. The wines that hold the highest rating are defined by what they deliver and not by the price tag.

A note from our team: wine preference is strictly personal. Before purchasing, read our tasting notes to find the bottles that suit your taste best.
