DEFINITION

Bordeaux

Bordeaux refers to a wine region in southwestern France, renowned for producing red wine blends of the same name from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes. White Bordeaux wines are also made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, while sweet wines (Sauternes) make up a smaller percentage of production. Bordeaux is divided by the Gironde Estuary into the Left Bank and Right Bank, where producers craft distinct wine styles.

Did you know? Despite being famous for their red blends today, Bordeaux wines were predominantly white until the 1970s.
