IGT

DEFINITION

IGT

IGT stands for Indicazione Geografica Tipica (in English, Typical Geographical Indication). It is an Italian wine classification that guarantees that at least 85% of the grapes used originate from the specific IGT region listed on the label. It represents a high quality category above basic table wines that don’t fit into strict DOC/DOCG regulations, thus allowing producers more flexibility in winemaking. Super Tuscans are a famous class of IGT wines.

Did you know? IGT labels can include the name of a specific grape variety (like Sangiovese), unlike traditional, regional wines.
