Microclimate

(mai-krow-klai-muht)
DEFINITION

Microclimate

Microclimate refers to the unique, localized temperature, humidity, sunlight and wind within a specific area of a vineyard different from the surrounding region. A microclimate allows for distinct and complex flavor profiles within a single vineyard. For instance, a sunny, high elevation slope may produce riper grapes with high sugar, while a shaded and low elevation spot in the same vineyard may yield slower ripening grapes with higher acidity.

Did you know? Vineyards located near bodies of water can experience a "two suns" effect, where the water reflects sunlight upward, increasing sugar accumulation and ripening of the grapes.
