Viognier

(vee-o-nyay)
DEFINITION

Viognier

Viognier is a full bodied, highly aromatic white grape variety originating from the Rhône Valley in France. It is lush and oily, featuring intense notes of peach, apricot, honeysuckle and orange zest. Its wines are dry, low in acidity and high in alcohol, often compared to Chardonnay, although they are more perfumed. Viognier is the only permitted grape variety in Condrieu wine.

Did you know? By the 1960s, Viognier grapes were nearly extinct, with only 35 acres left in the world, primarily in the Condrieu region of France.
