DEFINITION

Sommelier

A sommelier is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine dining establishments, who specializes in all aspects of wine service, food pairing and cellar management. Also known as wine stewards, they curate wine lists, advise customers on selections, manage inventory and ensure proper service. Many sommeliers obtain formal recognition and certifications from wine organizations.

Did you know? The term "sommelier" originates from Old French, translating roughly to "beast of burden". Historically, these individuals were responsible for transporting supplies such as wine for royalty before they evolved into the refined wine stewards that they are today.
