Martini

(maa-tee-nee)
DEFINITION

Martini

The Martini is a classic cocktail made with gin (or vodka) and vermouth, garnished with an olive, a lemon twist or both. To create the Martini, a bartender mixes the gin and dry vermouth at a ratio, usually 2:1 and stirs the mixture in a glass with ice cubes. They may add orange or aromatic bitters before straining the final drink into a chilled Martini glass. The Martini is known for its crisp, balanced and dry flavor profile, as well as its clear appearance due to stirring (and not shaking).

Did you know? A "dry" Martini used less vermouth, while the "wet" Martini contains a higher ratio of vermouth to gin/vodka.
